Seventy Excuses!

Hamdun al-Qassar said "If a friend among your friends errs, make seventy excuses for them. If your hearts are unable to do this, then know that the shortcoming is in your own selves."

Narrated by Imaam Bayhaqi in his Shu'ab al-Iman [7.522]

Shaykh ibn Baaz was asked, "How sound is the saying 'Seek seventy excuses for your brother'?" He replied, "What is prescribed for the believer is to respect his brother if he apologizes to him and accept his excuse if possible and to think positively of him whenever possible, in hopes that hearts will be free from resentment and that people will be brought together and will cooperate in doing good."

[Majmoo' Fataawa Ibn Baaz 26/365]
