One of the Vilest Deeds...

The Sealed Nectar states:

Ibn Hashim said, "Al-Humazah is the one who publicly mocks a person and Al Lumazah is the one who secretly declares defects of people and defames them."

'Uqbah bin Abi Mu'ait, Umaiyah's brother, once attended an audience of the Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) and listened to him preaching Islam. A close friend of his, Ubai bin Khalaf, heard of this. He could not tolerate any act of this sort, so he strongly condemned 'Uqbah and ordered him to spit in the face of the Prophet (
sallAllahu alayhi wa salam), and he shamelessly did it. Ubai did not spare any thinkable way to harm the Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam); he even ground old decomposed bones and blew powder on him. Al - Akhnas bin Shuraiq Ath-Thaqafi used to speak ill about the character of the Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) in season and out of season. The Noble Quran, in direct reference to this man's shameful deeds, attached to him nine repulsive characteristics:

"And obey not everyone who swears much, - and is considered worthless, a slanderer, going about with calumnies, hinderer of the good, transgressor, sinful, cruel - after all that base born (of illegitimate birth)" [68:10-13].

Backbiting and gossiping is a great sin, that the shaitan wants us to use our tongues to create conflict and hatred.

"Backbiting and Gossiping are from the most vilest and despicable of things, yet the most widely spread amongst mankind, such that no one is free from it except for a few people."

Prophet Muhammad (
sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) said :

"Do you know what backbiting is?" They said, "God and His Messenger know best." He then said, "It is to say something about your brother that he would dislike." Someone asked him, "But what if what I say is true?" The Messenger of God said, "If what you say about him is true, you are backbiting him, but if it is not true then you have slandered him." (Muslim)

Allah (Subhana wa ta'ala) has said in the Quran:

"O you who believe! Avoid much suspicion, in deeds some suspicions are sins. And spy not neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting). And fear Allah, verily, Allah is The One Who accepts repentance, Most Merciful" [49:12]

The Prophet (
sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) also said:

“A man might speak a word without thinking about its implications, but because of it, he will plunge into the Hellfire further than the distance between the east and west.”

Seek forgiveness from Allah, pay Zakaat, and make the intention not to commit the sin.

There are exemptions to backbiting, which include:

1. Complaining to someone about something unjust that has occured, who can remove the unjustness.
2. Asking for Fatwah (Islamic Legal Opinion)
3. Advising a Muslim about what is good for them in their daily life, i.e. asking about potential marriage partner.
4. Warning Muslims and raising awareness about the enemies of Islam

The Prophet (
sallAllahu alayhi wa salam) said:
“The Muslim does not slander, curse, speak obscenely or speak rudely.”

This is a sin that affects MANY Muslims today, brothers and sisters alike.
InshaAllah, may Allah help us to restrain ourselves from this disgusting sin, Ameen !
